Day Five: Albuquerque, NM to Grand Canyon, AZ

After many long hours waiting, Google video finally loaded my video from yesterday... As promised it is the first thing on today's blog.

This morning Matt and I decided to stay at the hotel until our checkout time of 11. We have been getting up early every single day so far and honestly we were just exhausted... We needed a down morning... After we left the hotel we got the oil changed, and headed to I-40

About 1 o'clock we stopped at this little restaurant called, "My Sister's Place." It was in a small New Mexico town called Gallup... It says on the sign good home cooking, but it was no meat and 3... It was home cooked Mexican food... Mine was good, but Matt's was a bit spicy.

About 15 miles after Gallup we entered our 8th state of the trip, and just like the others we had to stop and get a picture.

As we traveled across Arizona  we were just really surprised at how empty it was across I-40... For about 2.5 hours we saw nothing... no exits, no towns, no nothing... It was really even more desolate in this area than on the drive to El Paso...

After about 3 hours we cam up to the town of Flagstaff... Flagstaff is a great little town to come into after hours across the desert... The scenery there changed very quickly from desert to mountainous terrain with lots and lots of pine trees. The town was a quaint little town and looked like a great place to live.

Just outside of the city we went to Walnut Canyon National Monument. There was a huge canyon that made for a nice backdrop for pics.

If you notice in the center of the pic below you will see what looks like 3 caves... These are ancient Indian cliff dwellings..... It was neat to think about people living over there...I just could not figure out how in the world the would have gotten over there.

There were a couple of nature trails to walk on here and I took the opportunity to entertain myself with my camera. I hope you are entertained too!

After about 7 hours driving from Albuquerque we arrived at our home for next 2 nights...The Red Feather Lodge in Tusayan, AZ just outside the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. After we checked in around 6 we made a quick trip up to the rim to see it once before the morning hike. The pic below shows you my first ever peek at the canyon...
I WAS OVERWHELMED!!!!!

There are NO words!!!

After walking around the park for a bit we were both starving so we headed over to the
Yippe Kie Oh Steak House... If you are ever in the area... Eat somewhere else... Service was no good... Food left us both hungry.... but we didn't mind too badly because we are on our road trip and flexibility is what's making it fun!!!

Day  5 Stats:
Mileage: 404 Miles
Drive Time: 7 hours
Gas: $61.25 (This was the first time we paid more than 4 dollars. It was $4.19... I drove 2 more blocks down the street after I filled up and it was $3.89... :0(

Awesome pictures!! And yes the Canyon will leave you speachless. It's like climbing to the highest mountain and looking down and seeing God's magestic creation. But you don't have to climb, confusing, huh. That's the first time I have thought of it that way. You walk over to the side of the rim and poof you are all of a sudden at the top of a mountain looking down. God has a awesome imagination. A mountain range underground. To me it was like a breath of fresh air. A new look at the world God created for me and you. Ain't God good. Love ya. My prayers are with you and Matt as you travel. Pam

Hey Huck! I'll say that you and Tom were entertaining yourselves. Just exactly what were you doing?

I loved the slide down the white sand mountain. It looked like so much fun. Boy, Mattie was breathing so hard, it must have been a big hike.

Don't worry your Dad so, stay behind the safety rails.

Take care Huck.

Love ya bunches.
