Every summer of my life I have wanted to go on a drive across the country... I want to stop and see dinky little things along the way... Like the world's largest ball of twine, and the biggest statue of a corn cob... you get the point.... I was almost there last summer, but God had a different plan... This summer however, may be my time.... I am in the process of planning the trip now....
The plan is to leave on the 15th of June and be gone til we get done... Of course that should be some where around 3-4 weeks...
We are planning on going down through Atlanta and across the deep south into Dallas for the first leg... Then on to El Paso, TX where we hope to visit the Wade's, friends of ours from college...
After there we are headed to the Grand Canyon for a few days then on to Vegas.... While there we are planning to visit with my GREAT friend Teri... She is from Utah and lives just about 1.5 hours from Vegas.. I met her almost 14 years ago when I went to Europe...
After Vegas and Utah it's on to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole... I am hoping my friend Steve Miller will read this and email me with some suggestions about what to do and where to stay for cheap...
After a few days there we are headed across the upper plains to Mt. Rushmore, the Mall of America in Minneapolis, Cedar Point in Ohio, and down through Ohio and maybe to D.C. if we have enough money left by that point...
To end it all we will head down 95 south to Myrtle Beach for a few days of "recovery" before we head home.
I am hoping that all of you who read will offer some suggestions of things you may have done if you've ever visited any of the places in and around where we are headed... I look forward to your advice...
Needless to say a trip across the country will provide LOTS and LOTS of blogs... Stay tuned!!!

we're looking forward to you driving across 10 through El Paso! you guys are going to have a great time on your little trip around the country. i'll have to email you about things to make sure you see and do in vegas! we love vegas!!!
I grew up in Port Clinton, about 20-30 minutes from Cedar Point. Accommodations can be a little steep in Sandusky, so you may want to try Port Clinton. It'll be cheaper and not much of a drive at all. While you're there, you ought to consider taking the Jet Express to "Put-in-Bay" (Middle Bass Island), an island not far from Port Clinton. The Jet runs every 30 minutes or so and costs around $15 round trip. It's a lot of fun AND very educational (since you're a teacher!). The island has Perry's Monument in honor of Oliver Hazard Perry of the Battle of Lake Erie. (It'll help you brush up on some "yankee" history--yeah!!) Please let us know when you pass through Ohio--the girls and I will be in Port Clinton for most of the summer! My cell is (803) 292-5011. It'd be great if we could catch up with each other. My Dad was a truck driver and he was able to see 48 of our 50 states. Years later, after he came off of the road, he and my Mom, along with my aunt and uncle and their son, drove a converted bus across the country. They had a blast. My uncle had never driven a bus so, Mama said it was so funny riding along with my uncle driving and my Daddy teaching him. During one of those memorable lessons, Mama was in the toliet and, my uncle missed a gear, the bus started hopping and my Mama fell into the tub. My aunt had to rescue her and help her pull her pants up!! Daddy didn't ever get to take Mama to Niagra Falls, he got really sick before they could make that trip.
I hope you get to see everything you want to see. This will be a trip of a lifetime.
I admire your bravery to take on this endeavor and wish I had the guts to be so spontaneous. You definitley need to go to the Alamo in San Antonio and the River Walk. I have not been but my family has. Let me know if you need a place to stay in Texas. My aunt and uncle live there in Austin. My Nana has a motor home for sell also...not sure what you plan to use for transportation...Angie
I also know someone who has a house at Ocean Lakes if you need a place to stay at Myrtle Beach. Angie
I know you don't know me from Adam...having only "met" me over the internet. But we are close to South Bend, Indiana (Notre Dame and the "something" football hall of fame for something or other :) Plus Lake Michigan isn't far... we have PLENTY of hotel style rooms on the camp we live at if you are headed this way after the middle of July (we have Family Camps here from June until the middle of July). Anyway, I would be willing to offer a stop of. I kind of understand the whole idea since I travelled 3 years with Life Action and stayed with people I didn't know! Let me know if you're interested!
Oh... We are about an hour and half east of Chicago and 1 1/2 hours from Indy.
My family went to 49 of the 50 states before I got married. (we didn't go to Alaska, maybe Jody will take me there one day). I LOVE Yellowstone. Are you guys bringing your tents? Its way cheaper for sure. Are either of you AAA members? They do an awesome trip tik and travel books and discounts...plus roadside service. Worth looking onto for sure.
