Many times I have received thank you notes...... I got one a couple of weeks ago from my friend Dennis and Amy after their baby shower.... Sherry Vaughn always sends me one after I cook for them.... I send them myself after someone invites me to dinner or gives a donation to the cause.... As a matter of fact I even got one this morning from my friend Jennifer Bowling thanking me for her wedding gift....... I hate to admit this but I have yet to send out thank you notes for my high school graduation presents that I received 11 years ago.....
My point in writing all this today is to ask all of you "What in the heck are you supposed to do with them once you get them?" Do you keep them, store them, throw them away????......
I will tell you I have no idea what the etiquette is......... I Googled it and it believe it or not their are instructions on how to write a thank you note for every instance under the sun.... How ridiculous...teaching you how to say thanks.... that's a whole other blog............
I will confess and be honest with you this morning......Every thank you note I have received ended up in the trash..... NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE!!! I was appreciative for your thanks...... but after you read the card what are you supposed to do with it.... I am sure some of you will have an answer.......
That said.... if it goes in the trash, then is it really necessary??? I personally feel if you thanked me in person it is more than enough......if I expect anything more than that I question my motive for giving the gift.... Think about how much money you spend on them...then if you mail it.....Stamps are about to 41 cents... YIKES!!!!
I hope all you lady readers who are refined and know the ins and outs of how to do will let me know.... why are thank you notes so important........ and what in the heck do I do with them after I get them??? I look forward to you responses.....

Save them for about a month, then you can throw them away. That's what I would tell someone although I normally lose it for a month, then I find it and throw it away.

I am like you Jed, i just throw them away. Why keep them? I don't need a reminder that I sent them a gift and like you I didn't give a gift to get thanked anyways. But it is a nice thought that someone took time to write and say thanks.
I think thank you notes are more of a southern thing. I have friends from all over the country and they have always asked me why we do that?
I have another question...I have some friends that write thank you notes for Christmas and birthday presents. I have never done that in my life...am I being rude?
Kelly I have never written them for Christmas gifts or birthdays.... I don't think you are being rude...Hey you are the beaty queen...If you don't know...then who does???? :0)
Here's what Emily Post has to say...http://www.emilypost.com/everyday/thank_u_note_qna.htm
My Mama (God bless her southern heart) said it was the "thing to do"...they took the time to give you a gift, the least you can do is write them a note!
The only ones I keep are the sweet ones from my nephews and Sally. They are priceless.
I throw them away too. In the process of us moving I have come to the realization that I keep way to much crap! My question has been, what do you do with all the v-day, anniversary, wedding, baby, etc cards that you get??? I have trashed most but have kept the ones that are from special people in my life or that had a special comment in the card! But, when I think about it, what good does it do to keep them? I guess when I'm old and gray and have nothing to do I can sit and read them again. lol.

i'm terrible about writing thank you notes. jake doesn't see the point in it, so we owe people thank you notes for wedding gifts still! we know that's not going to happen now. i like getting them just because i like getting mail period. i do have good intentions, but they never lead to action for some reason.
i do say just trash them. there's no reason to keep them. what good are they after you've read it?
just my opinion.
Wellllllll..........I don't know what the fancy people do with them.......me......I keep them in the "mail pile" for awhile until it gets about a foot high......then I toss what I don't need. I always appreciate the gesture of a thank you note tho. :-)
