Is It December Yet?

Yesterday one of my students asked me that question. I replied, "no, not yet, just a few more days." His disappointment was immediate. A sigh, a frown, just a pitiful look. I knew that in his mind he was trying to figure out how far away Christmas was. I told him not to worry that it would be here soon enough. Now here we are on December eve. Tomorrow is December 1st, and the official 25 day count down to Christmas begins.

I am sure my students will be bouncing off the walls for the next few weeks until we get out again, but there is no other place I would rather be during this time of year than in a school with children. They make this time of year so exciting. Everyday they are talking about all the fun things that Christmas brings.

Starting tomorrow I will commit the next 25 days here at the blog to all things Christmas as we countdown to the big day. If you have an idea for a Christmas blog you would like me to share fill free to drop me a line and I'll see what I can do. Happy reading, and Merry Christmas!!!

Nothing Could Be Finer...

I love where I live. I have been lots of places and there is not another place that I would really rather live. Sure the beach would be nice, but I would get tired of the sand. Yea, the mountains would be nice, but its gets too cold and the snow would get dirty after a while. Yes, my friend Teri lives in the deserts of Utah, but it gets hotter than tar nation out there. I feel like my home state gets a bum rap all the time from the wonderful, super intelligent media, but I am here to tell them, there is no place like South Carolina. Here you find a people proud of who we are, and how we live. It might not make sense to all of you, but it's how we do.

We like our tea sweet.

We say yes ma'am and no ma'am.

We fry everything.

We like to shag.

We love football on Friday nights and Saturdays. (This weekend was THE game... GO COCKS!)

We eat grits.

On Thanksgiving, we say dressing, not stuffing.

We say y'all.

We strike up conversations with random people, because we are friendly.

We eat pimento cheese.

We are proud of our state flag. It's everywhere!

There is really no place like home. It seems every where I go I am reminded about things that I love about home. I even love the shape of our state. I found a 10 pound rock in a parking lot one day in the perfect shape of our great state. I loved it so much I brought it home and it is in my flower bed as I type.

Just today at lunch as I was eating my baked lays, I found a chip in the shape our shape. It was what inspired this blog.

Where ever you live, I hope you love it as much as I love my home. If not come on down. There is always room for one more! Nothing could be finer than to live in Carolina!

Plan Ahead

One question I have gotten more than anything during this last year of my weight loss journey has been, "How do I keep it off?"

That really is a simply question to answer but a difficult one to follow through on... The answer... Never go back to your habits, but change them! Once you've lost your weight do not get comfortable and star sneaking a bowl of ice cream here and a piece of cake there. Next thing you know you'll have gained back 10-15 pounds and be left wondering how in the world it happened.

One way I have made a change in an old habit is by planning ahead for food when I leave the house for an extended period of time. The old Jed would have just stopped by Chick-fil-a or Burger King while I was out and about. The new Jed takes his own bag of goodies that are healthier choices. This way I save money and don't eat lots of junk while I'm out.

This pic below shows my bag for today as I'm on the way to Charlotte again to work in the OCC Warehouse. We did stop at McDonald's on the way up, but I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and had wheat thins instead of the fries, all because I planned ahead had my bag of goodies. Some other things I have taken in my bag before are peanut butter, bananas, whole wheat cheezits, honey nut cheerios, gala apples, and baked lays.

Operation Christmas Child Warehouse, Charlotte, NC

This is my 5th year going to the OCC warehouse in Charlotte. It is so much work, but sooooo much fun! Here is a video I managed to shoot while working. We had 24 from church go today, and about 30 going tomorrow. I LOVE OCC!

A Week of Thanks- Day 7

This week of thanks has been a great week of reflection for me. I am sure some of you have been wondering each day when I am gonna to be thankful for Jesus, salvation, my mom, my sister, my best friend, my nieces, and even my brother-in-law, and I say to you, OF COURSE I AM THANKFUL FOR THEM... If you are a regular reader of the blog, I mention my faith, my family, and my friends more than anything on else on the blog.

Hopefully my life exudes thankfulness for those things. If you have to ask me if I am thankful for Jesus, then I most certainly am not living like I should. When I think of the forgiveness that He so freely poured out on this messed up life of mine, I am overwhelmed with thanks!!! Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, or April 23rd, you should be able to examine the life of any believer and see a life of gratitude for Jesus.

I love my mom so much that being thankful for her just goes without saying. Just the other day she spent her whole day off cleaning my house just because. I came home from school to clean floors, sparkling bathrooms, and dust free end tables. Who wouldn't be thankful for that?

My sister, nieces, and yes, even my brother-in-law are so important to me... Without them, life would be so boring. When we all get together there is always laughter, usually it's at the expense of my sister, but nonetheless there is laughter and good times. LOVE THEM!

There are no words to describe my thanks for my best friend Matt. He pays rent, he does the dishes, he trims bushes, and cuts the grass... all because he wants to! My great grandma Maudie told me one time..."When you find a good roommate, keep 'em. It's hard to live with just anybody!" If he ever moves out I will need to get an extra job to pay for a maid and a lawn man!!!

Seriously folks, I know I kinda made light of my thanks, at least for the the family and friends, but I love them all so much, and I am very grateful for all of them this Thanksgiving! Tomorrow is a normal day for me because I am beyond thankful every single day!

A Week of Thanks- Day 6

Today I am gonna share some of the "little" things I am thankful for.

1. This reclining couch I am sitting on with the promise of 5 days off!!!

2. My Christmas decorations are up and I am ready to enjoy the holidays.

3. Good Food... Since I have been eating healthier I have grown to really appreciate good food. My new favorite thing in the world, not necessarily a healthy item, is GOAT CHEESE.. I LOVE IT!

4. My Trumpet... I love playing the trumpet. I am not a really upbeat, big band player... I like playing like smooth jazz, Christmas music, church stuff. It is such a part of my life...Guess I should be thankful for my lungs and lips too huh?

5. My House... Still after 5 years of being here, every time I pull in the drive way, I have this surreal moment where I cannot believe that this is actual "MY" house.

6. Recycling Bins... I have been a recycl"er" for about 7 years now, and it thrills me to see them all over now. They used to now be anywhere. I am still sad that they are not at my church... Shouldn't we be leading the way??

7. A Dishwasher... If mine tears up I will only be in mourning for about 10 minutes... That is how long it will take me to get to Lowe's to get new one.

8. Seasons... I know some of you might think that is an odd thing to be thankful for, but I have some friends who live in places where the weather is the same all the time and they do not get to enjoy Fall and Spring like we do around here. I had a moment today as I ran where all these red and yellow leaves were swirling around me and it was so cool. Some people will never experience that.

9. Mistakes... Can you imagine if you never made any? You would have never learned anything, and you would be the most arrogant person ever!

10. Good Music... Music can take my emotions on a ride like no other thing in the world. It can make me run so fast as it thumps in my iPod. It can make me want to shout, spin, and dance. It can draw me into the presence of the Lord. It can make me weep. It can make me clap and smile. It is powerful! I cannot imagine life without it.

A Week of Thanks- Day 5

Today I am thankful for a career that I love! Teaching is about the best thing to do in the world. Some days I leave the school and can't believe I get paid to teach, mold, grow, and hang out with these great kids all day.

Yes, sometimes I leave and think they can't pay me enough to come back, but I always do. Every job is like that on some days. If you are a regular reader of the blog then you've seen some of the hilarious things that I hear, see, and do throughout the week. It is awesome! I absolutely LOVE what I do!!!

Some of the things that make my specific career even better are...

1. I believe with all my heart that teaching is what I was made to do. It feels great to go to work every day and know that you are right where you need to be!

2. I work with some awesome people. Everyone in my school is like a big family. We help each other, we cry together, we celebrate each other. It is a fantastic place to be each and every day.

3. Of course I have to mention summer's off... I wouldn't be a good teacher if I left that out right??? Contrary to popular opinion we don't sit around at the pool all summer. A teacher's work is never done. Just because they are not in the building doesn't mean they aren't working. Matt is making something for a lesson right now, and I am on the way to grade papers as soon as I finish this! It is nice to have a couple of months out of the building to fall back, regroup, and get ready to do it all again!

A Week of Thanks- Day 4

Today I am thankful for lazy Sunday afternoons. After a long week of work and a wide open Saturday, nothing is better than a filled up soul from church and a full belly from Wade's as you settle into that nap after church. It revives you just in time for the new coming week.

I must admit that my Sunday naps have changed a bit over time. I used to get in the bed as soon as I got home from church and sleep til like 6 or 7, get up and eat dinner, and then go back to bed. Now its just an hour at the most, and some times I don't even get half of that, but they sure are awesome when I get them.

I usually love what is on TV on those lazy Sunday afternoons too... TBS of ABC Family almost always have a good movie on that will help me drift off to sleep. Right now as I type I am enjoying my all time favorite movie, ELF. Tis the season right?

What do you like to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon? What ever it is, I bet you're thankful for it!

A Week of Thanks- Day 3

Today I am thankful for spontaneous, unplanned, moments with family. Not the big family dinners that are planned, the birthday parties, weddings, graduations, or things like that... The moments that just kind of happen... Where your family just kind of shows up on a plain old day and something special happens. I have had 2 of those with my nieces in the past month and they have been some of the most fun moments I have ever had with them.

1. Back on Halloween was a prime example of this kind of moment. Our family did Trunk or Treat together the day before Halloween this year. I just assumed that was our Halloween family fun. It was a great time! So on Sunday, the actual day of Halloween, I was not expecting anything out or the ordinary. I had some candy just in case I had a trick-or-treater stop by... I am so glad I had it because 2 of the cutest little fairies and witches I have ever seen came by. I was so excited to see them. They were so excited to be at BB's that they decided they wanted to sit on the porch and give out candy with me. This was the first time since I have been a grown up that I got to hand out candy, and I got to do it with my two favorite nieces...and it was all unplanned... A spontaneous moment with family that I will always remember.

2. The 2nd moment happened just last night. Matt makes great ribs. My family loves them so he called everyone on Thursday and asked them to come over for dinner Friday night. Of course they were eager to get to the ribs so they all agreed. I guess that part was planned, although it wasn't planned til the last minute. The spontaneous part came when Taylor and Sophie arrived and got so excited that I had my Christmas tree up. I didn't have any decorations on it, but it was all lit up when they got there. The first thing Taylor asked was if I had ornaments to put on?

Of course I had them, but they were still in the attic. I had originally decided to leave all that stuff in the attic until after they left because I didn't want all the people and all the mess every where in the house. My patience does have limits. But, when she asked in her sweet 7 year old way about the ornaments I could not resist. Taylor, Sophie, and I all went right into the attic and got everything we needed to decorate the tree. Right after dinner, I turned on the chipmunks, and some Bing Crosby, and voila.... the tree was decorated, we had a GREAT family time doing it, and it was all spontaneous! The best part, Matt and my brother-in-law Lawrence got in the festive mood and put all the lights on the bushed outside!!! What a great night.

I am so thankful for those spontaneous moments with family!

A Week of Thanks- Day 2

Today I am thankful for relaxation!!!!

I don't mean sleep or naps, but the kind of rest you get when you have no where to be, nothing to do, and no immediate responsibility. Isn't it great??

I am having that kind of moment even now as I type. My mom and sister are coming over for dinner, but someone else is cooking it. The house is clean so I don't need to tidy up. I might just take a nap when I am done blogging. Can you hear me say ahhhhhhhhhhh????

Here are just a few things I find that aide in my relaxing...

1. bedroom shoes... I LOVE THEM!!!!! I have 2 pair, but would love about 10 pairs!

2. Southern Living... I love to read this magazine... I know, I'm weird...but it is calming for me to just sit and read it. I think it reminds me of Grandma's when I was little.

3. Blogging... Believe it or not this is very therapeutic for me. I don't really care if anyone is reading. Many days I go back and reread what I typed just to be reflective.

4. Christmas Tree... Yep, it's only 4:00 pm and my tree is lit. It is making the house so calm.

5. Jazz.. I am a huge Jazz fan. I love some mellow Chris Botti to chill with. I think I need some now. I play it for the first 30 minutes of school every day. I started the Christmas Jazz music this week and the kids loved it.

This has been a long week and the rest and relaxation that I am experiencing right now is just what the body needed. I am soooo thankful!!!

Oh, did I mention that Friday is rest day on my running schedule too? So that is one more thing I don't have to worry about that today either. Don't worry, I am still thankful for my legs... I am thankful that my legs are getting a break today though ;0)

A Week of Thanks- Day 1

I am so blessed that I cannot even begin to write it all on this blog. The Lord has been so good to me I just don't even know where to start, but over the next week leading to Thanksgiving I am going to be blogging about just a few things I am thankful for. Feel free to leave a message of something that you are thankful for and share in a week of thanks with me.

Today I very thankful for my legs. I know that might seem like a silly thing to start off a week of thanks with, but today that's what is on my mind.

I am thankful for my legs because they get me from place to place... I never mind parking far away at the store.. I just consider it exercise.

They help me to teach. Of course I could teach without them, but it sure would be hard. I admire people who have lost limbs and continue on doing their passion. I could only hope I would be that strong.

For the past year my legs have helped me to achieve things in my life that I never thought possible...Who would have thought that at this time last year, that in just one year's time I would be running 10 miles a day and training for a full marathon?

All that said... Now you know why I chose them to be on my list for this week of thanks!

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The title of this post describes how I feel about most Wednesdays.

1. The Good- Wednesdays are good because they mark the turning point of the week, and the weekend is in sight! If you can get through Wednesday, you are usually home free to the glorious time off that the weekend provides. I always seem to get up a bit easier after Wednesday comes.

2. The Bad- Wednesdays are bad because I never get home from the day until after 9. I have lots of stuff going on every Wednesday, and it makes for a loooooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg day!

3. The Ugly- Wednesdays can get very ugly, but only every other week. The reason, that is when I get my haircut. You might not believe this, but every other Wednesday, my hair is a big ole bush. Thanks to Misty, I get it cut every other week. Good the thing "the ugly" only comes around every now and then.

What do you think about Wednesdays?

It Ain't Easy!

As I have been running since March a lot of people have started to ask my tips on how they can get started. I am quick to tell them that I am not an expert, but I attempt to give them some tips that have helped me over the past 9 months. What I also tell them, "It ain't easy!"

When you start running 9-10 miles a day, people just assume that you are a natural runner and that it comes easy to you. I am here to say that there is not anything easy about 10 miles. Almost every time I run, while I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, I have to go through this whole mental pep talk and overcome the battle. Here is a list of just a few things that I have to overcome as I run.

1. TIRED... I get tired... sometimes I start getting really tired at mile 4, and I have to push all the way to the end.

2. Sore... Even after all the months of running, sometimes when I finish I am hurting in my shins and feet. They don't call it a work out because for nothing!!!

3. Quitting in the middle... I almost every time I make the 5 mile turn and I see my car, I have to tell myself... Keep going, Keep going!!! Not one time since March have I quit the distance I set out to do, but that doesn't mean I don't have to give myself a pep talk right smack in the middle of my run.

4. Blisters... I cannot believe that I am still getting blisters... I thought my feet would have calloused up by now, but I guess not. I got one just today! I think it was because I stepped in a puddle though. It was kinda wet today.

5. Bored... I get bored sometimes. My iPod gets a bit repetitive at times. Most of the time my mind is thinking of all the stuff I have to do when I get done, and I often think of some good blogs, but sometimes, I am just ready to be done.

I share all this because I know that there are people out there who think that they are the only ones who face any of the dilemmas while running, working out, or just in daily life... The point, DON'T GIVE UP! Push through whatever you are in the middle and finish!!! You will be so glad when you do!

Operation Christmas Child 2010

Yesterday was our official shoebox collection day at church. I must admit I was a bit nervous about our ambitious goal of 1,500 boxes. That is a lot of boxes, especially in this economic time, but I was hoping for big things!!!

The boxes were already piled high when I got to church yesterday morning, but I could tell from years of experience that there was just not 1,500 there.

I tried not to get discouraged. I prayed and prayed as we started to organize them into their cartons and count them that there would be more than 1,500. I know, I know, its not about a number. That is so true, but I hoped for 1,500 because if we got that far, I would know that people were really getting the message and understanding the power of that little box.

What's the message..... IT IS NOT JUST A BOX... It is joy, hope, and life for so many who have received them. Most of us would be sad if a shoebox full of Dollar Tree toys was our only gift this year, but to the boys and girls who receive them they mean the world... I know, I have seen them delivered. I have handed the boxes to children in leper colonies, in mental hospitals, in children's ICUs, in impoverished churches, and in children's shelters all while in The Philippines... Trust me, it means the world to them!!!

As we neared the last box our total was 1,298. I knew that there just wasn't enough. Luckily, our youth group was busy packing their boxes in the gym. Bucky, the youth minister, told me earlier that he was hoping for 200. That was great... I hoped that could squeeze out 2 more. 202 was all we needed.

The packing team and I went over to the gym to help them finish. They completed 167. That was an awesome amount, and I was so proud of our youth. They did an amazing job!!!

While they were packing another member from church brought me some money to do some boxes for his Sunday School class. They meant to give it to me earlier but time had gotten away from them. There was enough money for 24 boxes....WOW! We were getting close!!! That was 1,489!

After we got all of those boxes packed, THANKS TO MY FRIEND GINGER, we only needed 11 more. The prayers got serious here... LORD, we only need 11!!!! Bring them in!!!!

As the 6 o'clock service was approaching, the Lord showed up... Last minute boxes started coming in and coming in. FINALLY, there was box number 1500... but it didn't stop there.... 1501, 1502, 1503........... Final tally as of last night... 1556!!!!!

But wait... there is more... This morning the church emailed me only to say that there were 32 more in the office... for a grand total of 1,588 boxes.

I am so excited right now as I type this. I am so happy for the 1,588 kids that will get a box because of what the Lord did in the hearts of the people at my church. I am already praying that He will move in their hearts even now to begin preparing for next year's collection.

Here is the challenge... If you did 1 this year, do 2 next year.... If you did 3 this year, do 5 next year.... If your Sunday School Class did 200 this year.... do 225 next year. Let's believe for big things and see what happens.

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!

Collection Week

This week is national collection week for Operation Christmas Child. If you know me or frequent my blog, then you know all about it! I hope that you packed at least one box. If not, it isn't too late. Watch my niece Taylor fill a box and go out now and do your own. You will not regret it. First Baptist North Spartanburg is the collection hub here in Spartanburg. Drop your filled box off there any time before 5 each day this week. Merry Christmas!

Silly Saturday 10

Here are some things that made me laugh this week.

1. I asked the class, "Why did Johnny Appleseed plant apple trees?" A student replied, "Because there wasn't any." I said, "well, yes you are right." Then I asked, "Who did he plant the apples for?"
Another student shouted, "Humans!!!"

2. A student in another class stopped me to tell me that he was born in 2002 and that it took him 8 whole years to turn 8 years old. When I asked his classmate how long it would take for him to turn 15, they said... about 17 years.

3. When we were practicing for our Veteran's Day program our narrator said, "Thank you to all of the veterinarians!"

4. Here is a letter one of my students wrote to his mother after the Veteran's Day program.

5. Here is a picture of these sticky rats that someone brought to school the Friday before Halloween. They threw them up on the ceiling and they stuck. I told them they would stay there until they fell down. 2 weeks later and they are hanging strong!

Veteran's Day

Today my students, along with the rest of the 2nd grade, honored our Veterans with our annual musical. It was a great way to spend the morning. Normally during the program I am focused on helping the kiddos do their best, and the emotions of our program take a back seat. That was not the case during today's performance. Everything from the colors being presented, to the kids singing God Bless America, to their standing at attention and saluting during the playing of Taps just moved me to tears. I was just overwhelmed with gratitude for every Veteran who has fought for my freedom, and beyond proud to be an American! I hope you did something today to say thanks or honor a Veteran.

A Few Things...

1. Thursday is our Veteran's Day program. It is going to be so good! I cannot wait to see my kiddos strut their stuff tomorrow during the Bugle Woogie Bugle Boy.

2. I have a friend name Ginger who makes the best spaghetti, and I am craving it right now.

3. I am getting my Christmas stuff down from the attic as soon I get all these shoe boxes out of the house.

4. My Mandivilla is so dead out on the birdhouse in the front yard, and I need to cut it down. It looks horrible.

5. My room is ginormous mess right now... mountains of clothes, the ironing board, Runner's World Magazine, battery charger, mail, my pants from yesterday, and a couple of hangers are all on the floor as I type!!!

6. The rest of the house is just as much a disaster as my room.

7. I will begin watching ELF weekly until Christmas starting tomorrow!

8. I hate trying on dress shirts that are all pinned up. I feel bad for undoing them and knowing someone is gonna have to redo them. I wish they would not package them that way.

9. I am already craving Thanksgiving food. I CANT WAIT!

10. I am worried I am going to forget to take my trumpet to school tomorrow for the Veteran's Day program. Send me a reminder text if you see this before 6:30 in the morning!

"CRAZY"

That is all I can say about this week, and it really has just begun. Here are just a few things that are working my brain extra hard this week.

1. Veteran's Day Program at school.

2. Making sure I am helping my 2 practice teachers as best I can.

3. OCC boxes are due Sunday!!!!

4. Getting on my marathon training routine with the darkness coming so early.

5. The mountain of clothes in my floor that I should be putting up right now instead of writing this blog.

6. State testing for 2nd grade at school.

The funny thing is.... All of these things will be over next week except for number 4, so if I can just hang on for the bumpy ride for just a few days, all will be well!

"Little" Life Accomplishments

I am taking a class on Monday nights to learn how to better meet the needs of gifted children. It has been an interesting class, and I have learned a lot. During the class tonight we were discussing the pefectionist child. Many times they are not able to see all their accomplishments because they focus on the things they cannot do or haven't done.

The teacher encouraged us to make a list of 20 accomplishments from any part our lives that were big and important to us, but may not seem "all that big" in the world's eyes in order that we could see some of our own accomplishments no matter how big or small. What a better place to do that than right here.

1. Installed deck lighting all by myself.
2. Played a trumpet solo during the marching show in 9th grade.
3. Ran for student council in 6th grade. I lost, but I was so proud I ran.
4. Hung all the blinds in my new house by myself 5 years ago.
5. Drove across country 2 times.
6. Repaired my broken power lock on my old Eclipse.
7. Making my first Alumini Casserole.
8. Running that first mile.
9. Meeting with the State Superintendent
10. Getting Donors Choose projects funded
11. Played The Star Spangled Banner all by myself to open the Upper State Band Competition
when I was in 9th grade. My whole family came. It was a big deal to me.
12. Keeping in touch with a great friend who lives out of state for 16 years!
13. In 4th grade I danced with this girl named Dena in our school program. My mom was so
proud!
14. Leading the Christmas Sing-A-Long at WHES. It was a blast!
15. Leading the OCC ministry at church.
16. Buying my first lawn mower. I felt so grown up!
17. Growing a beard. It's a man thing... Most of my readers are women I think.
18. Booking my first hotel room for a trip. Again, I felt like a grown up.
19. Leading a team to work at an Alaskan Youth Camp one summer.
20. Tonight I successfully answered the Final Jeopardy question.... It was about Heinz Ketchup!

Ask And It Shall Be Given

One time, several years ago I started complaining to a friend of mine about how I don't always get a buggy at Wal-Mart at the door, only to get way back in the store and realize that I should have got one. He asked me that day as we shopped, "Well, why don't you ask for one!" I laughed at him, but in as much seriousness as I could muster, I said, "Lord, I need a buggy!" Wouldn't you know it, we turned the corner and there sat an empty one way back in an obscure place of the store.

Since that day I cannot tell you how many times I have been there at the Wally World and asked the Lord for a buggy and He has been faithful to give it, but today He took it to a new level.

We were running around the store getting OCC stuff. I had a list a mile long with prices beside each item because I was trying to stay within the budget. I needed a pen really bad because I was going over on certain items, and I needed to do some figuring and some marking out... Trust me, I needed a pen. Matt suggested that I ask for a pen... I laughed, and jokingly said, "Lord, I need a pen."

Wouldn't you know it a few aisles over, there was a lady with a pen working on her own list. She noticed all the stuff in the buggy and asked me if I was gathering stuff for OCC boxes. I told her yes, and asked her could I borrow her pen. She not only let me borrow it, but insisted that I keep it. She said that she thought I needed more than her.

I know it may seem trivial to most of you to ask for something so small like a buggy or a pen, but God is faithful even in the small things. Next time you in there, and realize you need something, just ask... It might just surprise you at how He responds!

Proud to Be An American

Next week is the annual 2nd grade Veteran's Day Program at school. We have been practicing like mad, trying to get all the parts learned, sons memorized, etc. Sometimes in the whole "busy"ness of getting ready for the program I fail to get the whole point. Today it hit me like a ton of bricks all because of one tender-hearted student.

We were practicing the song God Bless America. We sing it as a tribute to Irving Berlin who was a veteran of WWI. During the song, I noticed one of my students crying. At first I ignored it because this particular student sometimes cries over where they stand in line. After another verse of the song the tears were flowing pretty heavily down the cheeks so I figured I better check it out.

I walked over to him and put my hand on his shoulder and asked what was wrong. With tears flowing down his cheeks like a river, he replied,

"This song just makes my heart fill good... I'm just so proud to be American."

Needless to say I became an instant mess. We cried for the next 3 songs. It is moments like these that make every second of work on a program like this worth it. I am honored to be in the classroom passing on the great honor and heritage of our country. God Bless America!

Kokomo

Yesterday, after 11.5 years of life, my sweet mom had to make the tough decision to put her dog Kokomo to sleep. He had really gone down over the past few weeks, and we knew that it was coming, but that did not make it any easier.

It was one of the most emotional things I have ever been a part of. There was a group of us that met her there at the Vet to be with her as the medicine was administered. I really had no idea what to expect, but I guess I thought that it would take a bit longer than it did. I got to the vet at about about 10:05, and by 10:20 it was all over. He will be missed by our whole family.

S.O.S (Save Our Surroundings)

You have read about Donors Choose before on here. It is a website where teachers can post proposals for things they need for their classrooms and anonymous donors from around the country can give 1 dollar to the full amount of the proposal to buy the materials for my their classes. I have seen LOTS of success with this site, and it is very addicting. My mind is constantly dreaming big for my students.

I currently have 4 proposals online, and one is really close to getting funded. I only need 88 more dollars to fund the proposal, S.O.S (Save Our Surroundings) Just click on the title there and you can go read it. I am asking for a class set of books to teach my students about habitats around the world and a habitats board game. With 88 dollars left I just need 11 people to give 8 dollars. Any takers out there in blog land? Click on the link and give today!!!

Election Eve

It is late on Monday...I am up late studying for voting tomorrow. I have been seeing this sign all around town and I just cannot help but see the irony (and humor) in this pic... A politician over a toilet? I do not know this man. I am sure he is not a bad guy. I just read a letter from him on a website and he seems to be a generally nice person, but the overall idea of a politician's face over the toilet just seems a bit ironic to me. What say you?

I will not tell you who I am voting for, because I still at this late hour on election eve have not decided, and because this blog is mostly entertaining and NOT political. I will be voting though. It is an honor and privilege! I cannot stand it when I hear people say they don't vote. They all have an excuse, but they are all so invalid to me. If men and women all around the world are risking their lives so I can vote and be free, it is the least I can do to educate myself and elect a leader... Get out there and let your voice be heard. I may just vote for this guy... who knows?
