Tartanilla and Pasil

Last week on Monday, Matt, myself, and Evelyn (a Filipino lady who is teaching with us) went on quite and adventure to downtown Cebu to gather some art supplies that we need for this year at school...

We rode on a tartanilla, which is kinda like a rickshaw, with a horse doing the work instead of a person... It was a cultural experience...and the poor horse knew there was some hefty Americans on the back... poor thing!

We also got to go to Pasil Fish Market....it was...... interesting....to say the least.... I wish there was a way to attach smells to videos...

Watch and enjoy! and remember...be patient with the videos...hit play then pause it will the little gray bar goes across...that is the video buffering...when it is is finished then hit play again and you can see the video without being interrupted.

Kids Club in Cordova...but no kids :0(

Today Matt and I went to 2 new Kids Clubs.. The clubs are part of a child sponsorship program and all of the kids that attend have sponsors in the US..The kids are taught Bible lessons and are tutored in other academic subjects... They are given a meal while at the club as well as a uniform.

This is video show you one of 3 venues that Matt and I have visited. We are visiting them to get a better idea of where the clubs are held and see their setup so we can better help them with a teacher training workshop..We hope to do the training at our school in about a month... There are some clubs on a neighboring island that we hope to go to as well..

The videos show the scenery outside and around their main meeting facility. Unfortunately the first video goes dark when I entered the building because the lighting was not good. There are no kids at this time because they had to change the time to the afternoon due to a program at the local school..

Make sure you tune in to the second one as well... It will show you the little place where one of the grade 1 group has their class... For all you teachers who think your rooms are no good and your school is so pitiful...this will make you thankful...

Matt and I hoping to help with the purchase of some white boards for some of the clubs and other various needs.... Let us know if you interested in helping...
Enjoy the videos!

I Hate to Be Mean!!!

Tonight as I blog, it is thundering and lightning outside.... and that describes how I am feeling on the inside right now, like there is a storm that is just raging..... let me explain

When my mom and Mandie came over here back in July we discovered there was a big problem with their return ticket... They had an unexplained, unmentioned, unrequested, unintelligent 36 hour layover in LA.... I freaked out because I was already nervous about the 2 of them flying around the world without me....... Thankfully, as they made their way from here to LA they were able to get on 2 standby flights all the way across the country.... but... the saga continues.

Matt and I got to noticing that our return flights for Christmas were also messed up with the unexplained, unmentioned, unrequested, unintelligent 36 hour layover in LA....Not what you want when you have been away from family that long... You are ready to go visit!!!! We immediately decided to try and change our flights so they would have better connections...

Long story short.... the same travel agency who messed up our connections apparently had messed up our ticket in the computer as well....

Soooo.... I had to get on the phone and call the travel agent.... the same one who messed up the flight plan that caused all the mess in the first place.....I called her last night.... I was so proud at how calm I was..... Matt said I was too nice and that I should have bit her head off..... Can y'all believe Matt Matt said that????

Anyway... she assured me the problem would be fixed when I woke this morning and of course.... IT WASN'T!!!! Sooooo.... do you see where this is going???

I had to call back tonight.... as soon as she heard my voice she tried to get snippy with me...and y'all...my blood went from normal to boil in about 2 seconds..... Matt was grinning from ear to ear... "Get her Jed, Get Her" his face was saying....

As I talked I learned that she had never even been out of the country except once and that was to Europe on some little 2 week vacation...... Obviously she had NO IDEA how it feels to be overseas and have the feeling of not having a way home... Yes, I KNOW it was all gonna work out Juju.... but all the trouble was her fault to begin with......

After I hung up I felt really bad about being so mean to her... I know a lot of you probably think that setting people straight is a gift, but sometimes I just HATE being that person....

As of now...11pm Friday night, the issue is still not corrected... I gave her my Filipino travel agents email at 930 and she was supposed to email her then.... My agent just called and she hasn't heard anything... Pray everything will get cleared up soon... Our deadline is Wednesday, the 29th.

UPDATE TO THIS ENTRY!!!!!!!! AS OF 7:00 AM Saturday the 25th, I have an email confirming our correct flight to home for the holidays!!!!!!!!! Thanks for praying!

Twas the Night Before School

Twas the night before school
in the land of Philippines
The teachers were wondering
if their hard work would be seen.

They knew they had done
their very, very best
Now tomorrow is coming
would they pass the test?

They both were nervous
about the lessons and plans
but dumbly they worried
about the opinions of man.

Jesus gave them comfort
as they worried that night
He told them He loved them
and everything was alright

Regardless of the year
and all of your fears.
I am with you He reminded,
I am always near.

So go on tomorrow
and teach in my name
love them, teach them
and shout My fame.

Show them My love
in each and every thing
Whether noticed or not
you work for the King.

It is our honor and privilege,
the teachers cried out.
Forgive us Lord
for having our doubts.

So now they were ready
for school the next day.
For they knew He'd be with them
every step of the way.

So peace had come
and the teachers were calm
for Jesus's peace
was a healing balm.

They knew the master
was their saving grace
its an honor... a privilege
to serve in this place.

Sometimes I...

Today, in order to keep my self as normal and humble as possible, I decided to rip off someone else's blog title and write about some things the I sometimes do.... here goes...

Sometimes I.......
  • eat grapes off the bunch at the grocery store.
  • wonder how I could sneak in movie without getting caught, but I never actually do it.
  • get mad at a noisy cat and I try to hit it. One time I did and the cat didn't meow for days!
  • ....ok this is not a sometimes but an all the time.. I laugh when people fall down or trip.
  • wonder about silly things like.... do plants have feelings...and do birds know that when we "shoot one" its bad to do so..... :0)
  • say I am working late when I am really just goofing off on the Internet.
  • watch Golden Girls on DVD all day long!!!! Mama's Family too!!!
  • get my nose hairs waxed.
  • call Sterling and pretend to be Jesus.
  • pass gas in public places just to laugh at the people who are with me that get embarrassed.
  • get very mad when I see people misuse crayons.... there is a correct way... ask me if you need to know.
  • don't answer the phone because I don't like talking to the person who is calling. (You know you do that too!!!)
  • make silly faces in the mirror or on my computer cam just to see how funny I can be.

  • go down a different aisle at the grocery store when I see someone I don't want to talk to coming.
  • wear a shirt that says ..."Be nice I know Santa!" in the middle of the summer just to see people laugh.
  • use another person's toothbrush... I know it's gross...but what if you forgot yours??
  • get bored listening to my granny on the phone... and I respond with "uh-huh" about every 5 seconds to make it sound good.
  • make up songs about funny things and sing them loudly... just ask Matt.... Maybe one day you'll get a video of that on here.... You can only hope!!!
  • Google my own name along with a long list of other silly stuff.... like... how long it takes to grow a pumpkin, the history of ketchup, why do they call it scotch tape, and who has the longest toenails.... I can't help it... I'm curious.
I hope this list provided you with some laughter...and gave you a glimpse into the "real" me... You know...that side of us we all have, but work our whole life to hide....

Anyway... I would love for you to respond to this blog with this statement.... "Sometimes I...." and tell me a little bit about yourself...

Have a great day, and be encouraged, because even with all these silly things that are me....

God made me special, and He loves me very much!- Junior Asparagus, Veggie Tales

Who and Where in the World

I hope all of you have noticed to the right a new counter on my blog... I added it just a few days ago... It tells me every city where someone clicks on my blog... Supposedly it only counts 1 time per computer... which means there are lots of you reading... which begs the question... Why don't more of you comment????

I have no idea where Buford, Georgia...Plafftown, NC....Matairie, LA.... or Boones Mill, VA is....but I have multiple people in each city reading... plus lots of others....

I would love to ask those folks and any other reader who I don't know to say hi sometime... I would love to know who you are...how you found this blog.... and make a connection to my readers.... It is amazing to me that you read here... Thanks for taking the time to stop by each day... I look forward to hearing from many of you....

Frequent commenters... you can comment too... Its always good to hear from Juju, Megie, Shen, and Kevin.......

Have a great day!

2 for the Price of 1

Well.. I guess that title doesn't make much sense does it... Because you really don't pay anything for my wonderful online wit and charm do you.... If only I could charge....Hmmmm... Naaa You guys are great.... Freebies are the way to go... Anyway... I decided to post some still pics of my "new home" for the next couple of days and at the bottom their is a video we made in Olongapo....... I hope ya'll enjoy them

The first shot here is my classroom as you walk in the door. Notice my new curtains...They were not in the last video... I was a bit over anxious to show you then... A lot seems is different in there now.

This the Bulletin Board when you come in....

This is the sign beside my clock... This was Matt's idea.. He had a poster like this one in his classroom at Beech Springs... It is supposed to keep you from staring at the clock and wondering what time school gets out.

Also on the board is a verse of the week. Each student will have to recite the verse of the week for a test grade to be added to their overall Bible grade... You guys should memorize it too... I think I will put it on here each week and you can memorize with us. I thought this one was great for the beginning of a school year.

This is a view of the room from the front looking back.

A closer shot reveals the students personal space... In early childhood terms AKA: cubbies.. That just didn't seem the appropriate name for 5th graders though..

To the right in the pic above you see our daily schedule... Not really sure why I put this one on here other than for my teacher friends...

My wonderful desk!

A Student Desk

I made these little subject tags for the board to help the students keep their homework organized..... I can hardly wait til next Tuesday!!!!!

And now for the 2...... of the 2 for 1.... This is a video we made last week in Olongapo... It explains one of the neat ways we ministered to people while there... Enjoy!!!

A Filipino Wedding

Saturday afternoon/evening Matt and I had the privilege of attending our first Filipino Wedding.... It was great... Check out all the neat pics below... The first 3 are shots of the venue!

The Altar

The Guest Tables

The Bride being escorted by her mother and 2 brother... It was a special time for the bride, her name is "Love Love"

Each guest had their personal place setting... The starfish was a magnet!!

For the preacher's message the Bride and Groom sat..... guess some preachers can get a bit long winded..its too hot to stand too long...thankfully our preacher was great... not too long at all... Good job Les :0)

This was one of the neatest parts... Instead of a unity candle, they each had a jar of sand.... as the two jars were separate they each had their own sand... But as they poured it together you could no longer tell whose sand was whose.... very neat!!

IT'S OFFICIAL!!!

Lechon.. traditional food over here....

The Singles Table

Group shot with all of the folks from Quest!!!
A Special thanks to Paul and Love Love for having us at their wedding... I will NEVER forget it... I had a great time enjoying the venue all day.... It was a blast.... I hope you guys have a great and wonderful life together... God Bless!

Pics From Olongapo

Okay.... Let me begin by apologizing for stinking at the blog this week... I have been so disappointed... I know my readers are expecting wonderful things and I don't like to let people down..... I have been super busy this week... I was telling Les Tilka, one of the parents from JCA, and the preacher at Quest, the church we attend here....that time seems to just run out so quickly here.... Where in the heck does it go.... who knows??? For Matt and I it goes to travel... If we take a jeep to and from school... that takes at least hour hour and half.... that's if everything is smooth...

Anyway... As promised... I have some pics from our Olongapo/ Manila trip...

This first pic is me arriving at the Manila Airport.... I know I look good... save those comments for another blog!!

This is Matt and I at the venue of the first outreach concert..... Each event lasted from 3-10ish...

You can see there were tons of people there.... WE LOVED IT!!! There was a carnival type atmosphere... There were 2 American teams there who set up different fun stations around the venue.... There was an ice cream station, balloon animals, mobile foot washing and massage, face painting, the ladies could get their nails painted... It was great... There was another guy walking around passing out those colored bead bracelets and sharing the plan of salvation...

Our "official" job as asked by the band was to take pictures.... I snapped for the glory of God... I did stray away from my job for a bit though.... Towards the end of the presentation the gospel was presented.. During that time I really felt the Lord nudge me to have a seat right here beside the man in the yellow shirt... After the Gospel was presented... sure enough the man had lots of questions... as did all the people around him.... I had the privilege of sharing about the love and freedom of Jesus with all those around... The man in the yellow shirt (his name was Roy...pray for him) said he was going to Calvary Chapel Church, the church that sponsored the event, the next Sunday....

There is another guy who really touched my heart in this pic... In the white shirt... his name was David... You cannot see it in the pic, but David has no fingers.. He was the nicest guy and seemed to have a nice spirit about him, but he had some crazy views about the world and Jesus... Pray for him... I shared about how good, great, awesome, and free Jesus was.... That is our only goal as believers....just to be obedient in sharing about HIM!!!

Below is our venue for the next night..... Again LOTS of people there..... there was one in particular that I was thrilled to see.... Look at the next one....

This is David... the guy from the night before.... I was so excited to see him there at the different venue.... He told me that no one had ever talked to him about Jesus the way I did.... I hope he heard something new and exciting....... You see his hands in this pic.... It broke my heart..... I probably will never see this guy again but pray that we will all meet him again in Heaven one day!

Praise the Lord

That is all I can say about the past few days..Praise the Lord I am safe...Praise the Lord I am home in Cebu...Praise the Lord for phone and Internet....and just for old times sake..Praise the Lord for Chili's... Let me just tell you all that has happened....

After my wonderful lunch at Chili's on Monday we headed to the airport.... It had been raining very heavily during the day.... We were just praying that the weather would clear before our flight..... It did...but it didn't stay that way.... As we were boarding it really started to pour the rain... I mean cats, dogs, goats, pigs, you name it...it was falling...... To make matters worse it started thundering and lightning... I was just praying they would say we were gonna ride out the storm on the ground, but nope.... here we went...

As we taxied down and took off... you could immediately tell it was gonna be a long flight... but the confident captain said it will be a little bumpy to start and then we will be out of the mess... WRONG!!! It was bumpy the whole way... One time we dropped pretty quickly and Saralee grabbed my hand across the aisle... We were laughing but we were all pretty scared....

Thankfully the flight was only about 45 minutes...but the landing itself was kinda scary too... Instead of landing straight like normal, we kinda came in sideways a bit..... Even so...the ground had never looked so sweet!!!!

I was so glad to be home and call some family..... then I picked up our vonage phone...it was dead.... no phone... no Internet..... apparently it had disconnected itself while we were gone.... That was Monday evening....now its Wednesday evening..... and thankfully the phone and net are working again...........

Maybe tomorrow I will be settled enough from my excitement to share some of the pics from our trip to Manila.... It was a blast.... I had a great time getting to know the band more... we had some....interesting experiences to say the least..... and the Lord was definitely at work in the lives of the people in Olongapo... 'Til Tomorrow!!!

Leaving Manila

Today we are leaving Manila...... Our flight leaves at 730PM so just as you are waking to read this, we will be taking off towards Cebu..... Before we left Manila we had the privilege of eating at a great American restaurant..... CHILI'S.... The food was just like home..... Words cannot describe how great it was.... Below is a picture of our group in the restaurant.... Look how happy we all look!!!! Being full is a good feeling!!!!

Shady Internet Cafe

That's where I am.... a shady Internet cafe in Olongapo, Philippines... For all of you back home who have no idea where that is... I am here and still don't know where it is.... All I know is that after we got to Manila we got in the back of a jeepney like truck with aircon and drove til my hind parts were fast asleep along with the rest of me.... about 3.5-4 hours....... I do know that we are A LONG WAY from that volcano that you all emailed me about.... DON'T WORRY!!!! We are relatively close..according to Saralee... to the infamous Mt. Pinatubo that irrupted many years ago here and caused lots of trouble... I think it's about and hour and a half two hours away.... Here in the Philippines that is relatively close

When we got here we checked into our "quaint" Filipino hotel and then headed over to a local church that is kinda the hub for the 2 day crusade.... There we meet some other Americans from Hawaii and California who had been here for 2 weeks..... They leave this weekend. They have been laying the groundwork for the crusade by passing out fliers and tickets for the event....

There is gonna be a raffle where tons of prizes will be given away...One of which is a motorcycle... you can just imagine what a prize like that would do for some of these poor families

The crusade starts this afternoon at 3 and runs til 10... It is gonna be a carnival like atmosphere... I am gonna do my best to get lots of great pics for you guys..... This place is definitely different than Cebu..... Lots of children begging on the streets, (especially to us white boys).... the jeepneys look different, and the people speak a different language....

We had some down time after lunch so my great Filipino friend Shen, Mel's wife, gave me a tutorial on Cebyuano.... I wrote 2 pages of notes and words.... The have this "ng" sound that is difficult for us Americans to catch on to.....

We will be here in this town until Sunday morning and then we will head back to Manila... I should be able to blog again...either at this cafe or in Manila....

While we are in Manila we will be staying with our great friend Dennis' mother.... It will be a great experience there....

A funny story from last night..... Matt and I are sharing a room... and of course the beds are teeeeeee tiny...... and of course there is only 1 per room... so we had to share... the only cover we have is a sheet as thin as one ply toilet paper..... the aircon was on all night..... and Matt is a cover hog.... my toes are still thawing out....... I know you are all thinking..why didn't you just turn the air off.... We tried that...but in a matter of seconds these 2 pieces of white meat were cooking in the little oven we called a hotel room......

All that said.... there is not a place on earth I would have rather been..... This is a great trip and and awesome place to be..... I can sense that the Lord is doing things here, and I am so honored and humbled to be a part of it!!!!!!

Please pray for us around 630ish EST.... I do not know if I will have access to Internet and the blog during this time.... All you lazy, slow poke readers get caught up..All you daily addicted readers take a sedative and calm down... I will be back soon!!!!

I expect my email box to be full when I return..... Thanks in advance for all the prayers!!!!!!
